Australia Post warns of "parcel delivery phone call" scam

Monday, 31 October 2011

Australia Post is alerting customers to an unsolicited phone call scam which claims that a parcel could not be delivered to the recipient and that redelivery can be arranged after a payment is made.

The scammer may present themselves as an employee of Australia Post or staff member from one of our retail outlets. The scammer will provide a reason as to why delivery has failed (e.g. parcel too large) and advise that with a payment, delivery can occur.

Australia Post will never call customers to request payment for an undeliverable mail item. If you receive an unsolicited call that matches this scam, we recommend simply hanging up and reporting it to the ACCC via www.scamwatch.gov.au or by calling 1300 795 995. If you accidentally provide account or banking details to the caller, you should contact your bank or financial institution immediately.

Australia Post is a supporter of National Consumer Fraud Week and is committed to helping Australians avoid becoming victims of scams. To find out further information on scams and how you can protect yourself, visit www.scamwatch.gov.au.
