Disruption to Australia Post Operations in Queensland - Update

Thursday, 13 January 2011

Mail delivery into and out of flood affected regions of Queensland is severely impacted and subject to major delays.

Australia Post will continue to transport small and large letters via air to the northern regions for delivery to those areas that are still accessible, but with air freight capacity limited, essential supplies will sometimes take precedence, and mail may take longer to get through.

With major roads to the north blocked, we are using sea to ship parcels from Sydney to Townsville for all areas from Rockhampton north and west.

Small and large letters are reaching Rockhampton and Mackay via air, as roads to the north are expected to be restricted for at least another week. Access to Toowoomba is also restricted with major road arterials cut, but deliveries are occurring for local product within the region. Access into the Sunshine Coast has been restored, with mail now moving again.

Around 4000 points in the Grafton catchment area cannot be delivered to due to the Pacific Highway being blocked.

Delivery to addresses within the Brisbane CBD and other metropolitan areas will be delayed where roads are blocked. As at Wednesday 12 January there are more than 70 post offices closed, including:

Australia Post is encouraging customers to visit www.auspost.com.au for updates, but asks people to understand that this is a crisis situation of unprecedented magnitude and the advice about which areas are impacted is changing almost hourly. We cannot guarantee next day delivery for Express Post items, given the extreme circumstances.

Free mail redirections will be offered for those unable to have mail delivered to their current address due to flood damage.
